The Floating Oceans

Diagram of Cloud Types

Look up. There is an ocean floating over your head. A single, fluffy white Cumulus cloud can weigh 1 million pounds (500 tons). That is the weight of 100 elephants. How do 100 floating elephants defy gravity? Surface Area. A cloud isn't a bag of water. It is a mist of billions of microscopic droplets. Each droplet is so small that gravity can barely grab it. The gentle upward current of warm air rising from the ground is enough to keep it suspended. It is the same reason a speck of dust floats in a sunbeam. If the droplets smash together and get too heavy for the air to hold... they fall. We call that Rain.

The 4 Cloud Families

In 1802, a man named Luke Howard looked at the chaos of the sky and realized there were only four main types of clouds. He named them in Latin:

  1. Cumulus (Heap): The "Simpsons Clouds." Puffy white cotton balls. They form from pockets of warm air rising (convection). They usually mean fair weather.
  2. Stratus (Layer): A gray, flat blanket that covers the whole sky. This is basically fog that hasn't touched the ground. They mean a gloomy, drizzle day.
  3. Cirrus (Curl): High, thin, wispy brushes. They look like feathers. They are so high (20,000 feet) that they are made of Ice Crystals, not water vapor.
  4. Nimbus (Rain): The "Boss" clouds. Any cloud that gets dark and rains adds "Nimbus" to its name. A Cumulonimbus is the giant anvil-shaped thunderstorm tower that brings lightning and tornadoes.

The Dust Secret

Diagram of Water Cycle

Here is a secret: Pure water cannot turn into a cloud. If you have perfectly clean air, water vapor will stay invisible, even if it is freezing cold. To turn into a visible cloud droplet, the water needs something to grab onto. It needs a seed. This is called a Condensation Nucleus. It can be a speck of dust, a grain of pollen, a crystal of salt from the ocean spray, or even bacteria. Without dust, the sky would be empty. This is why rain smells like "earth" (Petrichor). You aren't smelling the water; you are smelling the dust and plant oils that were trapped inside the raindrops.

High vs Low Pressure

We don't feel it, but the air is heavy. At sea level, the atmosphere pushes down on you with 14.7 pounds per square inch. That is like having a bowling ball sitting on every inch of your body. We don't collapse because our internal pressure pushes back. Weather is just a war between two pressure systems:

  • High Pressure: The air is cool and sinking. It squashes clouds and pushes them away. Result: Clear, sunny skies.
  • Low Pressure: The air is warm and rising. As it rises, it cools and condenses into clouds. Result: Storms and rain. The wind is just air rushing from High to Low pressure, trying to fill the gap.

The Sky Spark: Lightning

A Cumulonimbus cloud is a giant battery. Inside the cloud, ice crystals crash into each other. The small crystals get knocked Up (Positive Charge). The heavy slush gets knocked Down (Negative Charge). The cloud separates charges just like rubbing a balloon on your hair. Eventually, the voltage difference becomes too huge for the air to stop. SNAP. A bolt of electrons rips through the sky. It heats the air to 50,000°F (5x hotter than the Sun surface) in 0.001 seconds. The air effectively explodes, creating a shockwave we call Thunder. You see the Flash first because Light is instantaneous. You hear the Boom later because Sound is slow (5 seconds = 1 mile).

Tornado Alley

Why does the USA have more tornadoes than anywhere else on Earth? Geography. To make a tornado, you need a collision of three things:

  1. Cold, dry air from Canada (North).
  2. Warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico (South).
  3. Hot, dry air from the Desert (West). These three air masses crash into each other right in the middle of America ("Tornado Alley"). The collision creates massive rotating supercells. In Europe, the Alps block the mixing. In South America, the Amazon dampens it. America is the world's mixing bowl for perfect storms.

Fast Facts

  • Green Skies: Why does the sky turn green before a tornado? It is a color mixing trick. The storm cloud is dark blue (deep water). The setting sun is shining yellow/red light. Blue Storm + Yellow Sun = Green Sky. It is nature's warning light.
  • Cloud Seeding: We can make rain. Planes fly into dry clouds and dump Silver Iodide crystals. The water vapor instantly snaps onto these fake "dust" seeds and creates rain. China famously used this to clear the pollution before the 2008 Olympics.
  • The Coriolis Effect: Why do hurricanes spin? Because the Earth spins. The Equator moves faster than the Poles. This difference in speed twists the wind. In the North, storms spin Counter-Clockwise. In the South, they spin Clockwise. Hurricanes never cross the Equator because they would have to stop and reverse direction!
