What Are Clouds Made Of?
The Heavy Weight of Fluff
When you look up on a beautiful summer day, clouds look like giant, weightless piles of soft white cotton candy drifting lazily across a blue ocean. They look so light that you could theoretically take a nap on one.
But here is the absolute reality: a single, medium-sized white cloud can weigh over 1.1 million pounds. That is the same weight as 100 fully grown elephants floating directly over your head!
So, how can something that heavy stay in the sky without crashing down? And what are they actually made of if they aren't made of cotton?

The Secret Ingredient: Dust
We often think of clouds as pure, clean water. But in reality, you cannot have a cloud without a little bit of "dirt."
The air all around you is filled with invisible Water Vapor—water in its gas form. To turn that gas into a visible liquid drop, the water needs a solid surface to grab onto. In the sky, those surfaces are microscopic specks of dust, smoke from fires, or even tiny grains of sea salt blown up from the ocean. These are called Condensation Nuclei.

When warm air rises and cools down, the invisible water vapor molecules lose energy and start to slow down. They find a nearby speck of dust and "stick" to it, forming a tiny liquid droplet or a microscopic ice crystal. When billions of these tiny droplets huddle together, a cloud is born!
Why They Float
The reason a million-pound cloud doesn't fall is because it isn't one solid object. It is made of trillions of microscopic droplets that are so small (much smaller than a grain of sand) that they are effectively weightless.
The air underneath the cloud is constantly rising. These gentle upward currents of warm air act like an invisible hand, constantly pushing the tiny droplets back up. It would take millions of these tiny droplets to combine into one single raindrop before they become heavy enough to overcome the air currents and fall as rain.
The White Light Trick
Why are clouds white instead of clear like a glass of water?
It's all about how they handle sunlight. Because a cloud is packed with so many millions of droplets, the sunlight can't just pass straight through. It hits a drop and bounces. Then it hits another and bounces again.
This non-stop bouncing (called Scattering) mixes all the different colors of light back together. Since sunlight contains every color, mixing them all back together creates the brilliant, pure white color we see from the ground. When a cloud gets very thick and full of water, the light can't get through at all—and that's when the cloud turns a dark, scary grey, warning you that a storm is coming!
