The Ultimate Speed Trap

So how does a tiny piece of rock light up the entire night sky? It's all about insane speed and extreme friction.

Out in the deep vacuum of space, these rogue rocks (known as meteoroids) cruise around at terrifying speeds—often traveling up to 160,000 miles per hour! As long as they are in the empty void of space, they are completely invisible, silent, and freezing cold.

But Earth is surrounded by a thick, invisible shield of gas: our atmosphere. When a high-speed meteoroid suddenly slams into this wall of air, it’s like hitting a concrete barrier. The air directly in front of the rock gets compressed so violently and so quickly that it instantly superheats to thousands of degrees. This intense, crushing heat causes the rock to glow brilliantly and vaporize into a trail of hot, glowing atmospheric gas.

This blazing streak of light is what scientists call a meteor. Most of them completely disintegrate high in the sky before they ever reach the ground. If a chunk is large and dense enough to survive the fiery plunge and actually hit the dirt, it earns the title of meteorite.
