Why Are Flamingos Pink?

It is an old saying that 'you are what you eat.' If a human ate absolutely nothing but sweet potatoes and thick orange carrots for six full months, their skin would actually genuinely begin to turn a slightly orange hue. For humans, this is a very rare medical exception.

But for a beautiful, long-legged Flamingo, this intense dietary color-change rule is a mandatory law of biology. When a new baby flamingo hatches out of its delicate egg, its tiny feathers are not pink at all. They are entirely born completely dull gray or plain white. The magnificent pink color they are famous for is strictly not a genetic trait built into their DNA.

The Shrimp and Algae Diet

Adult flamingos prefer to spend their spectacular lives gracefully wading squarely through incredibly salty, shallow massive lakes and heavily toxic saltwater lagoons.

Using their highly specialized, bizarrely thick upside-down hooked beaks, they constantly filter hundreds of thousands of microscopic blue-green algae, tiny swirling brine shrimp, and heavy mud directly out of the murky water.

These tiny brine shrimp and algae are fully packed with a potent chemical compound called Carotenoids. This is the exact same organic chemical strictly responsible for making carrots bright orange and tomatoes beautifully red.

As the majestic flamingo continuously digests this pigment over several years, the strong color forcefully strictly saturates directly into their delicate bloodstream and beautifully permanently stains their growing feathers pink! If you take a captive zoo flamingo and feed it generic bird seed with zero carotenoids, the grand bird will quickly molt its beautiful pink feathers and eventually turn entirely white all over again.
